On the day that local health trusts are expected to rubber stamp proposals to close the Coronary Care Unit at the Westmorland General Hospital, local MP Tim Farron has written to all GPs across his constituency to ask them in confidence for their opinions on the closure.

International Court needs more power to bring Darfur war criminals to justice - Farron

Local MP Tim Farron has condemned the Sudanese government for putting suspected war criminals beyond the reach of International Criminal Court. He has tabled a motion urging the UK and its international partners to take action in order to ensure that justice prevails in Darfur. The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued two arrest warrants against government minister Ahmad Harun and Janjawid leader Ali Kushayb suspected of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Darfur, Sudan. Tim hopes that, with the support of fellow MPs and human rights group Amnesty, more will be done to prevent the remit of the ICC being circumvented by the Sudanese authorities who have so far refused to allow the accused be tried for crimes including murder, rape and torture.

MP reveals 91% rise in Council Tax in 10 years - and calls for abolition

Local MP, Tim Farron has revealed figures obtained by the Halifax Bank that show that the level of Council Tax for an average sized property across the country has almost doubled in the ten years since Labour came to power in 1997. The burden on homeowners has therefore increased massively, and the rise is more than three times the level of inflation.

Farron asks Minister to protect older people from abuse

Local MP, Tim Farron used Health Questions in parliament today to ask the Health Minister Ivan Lewis the Department of Health's opinion on the regulations designed to prevent elder abuse. Mr Farron asked the Minister if in light of a Help the Aged report which claims up to half a million pensioners are being abused, the Department consider the guidelines to be stringent enough to prevent such abuse.
