Farron to call hill farming summit in Westminster

Local MP Tim Farron has set about calling a summit on hill farming in the House of Commons in his role as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hill Farming. Mr Farron has invited the Government's rural communities advocate Stuart Burgess from the Commission for Rural Communities to come and address the group.

Farron stands up for small abattoirs

Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron has today posted a parliamentary motion in support of small abattoirs, which face Food Standards Agency plans for the Meat Hygiene Service to move towards full cost recovery - a move that could potentially see many small abattoirs go under, as their inspection costs, already numbering thousands of pounds, could multiply eightfold. This would have ramifications for both the meat processing industry and the environment, through increasing food miles. In addition, the loss of small abattoirs would increase the potential for a nation-wide outbreak of disease,

Farron calls for fairness in Animals Act

Local MP Tim Farron is to support the Private Member's Bill to amend The Animals Act 1971 for a fairer deal for animal owners. The Bill which is having its second reading this Friday directly addresses the issue of rising costs of insurance for owners of cattle and horses.

Farron to judge 'Kirkby Lonsdale's got Talent!'

On Friday, local MP Tim Farron will be on the panel of judges for the talent show 'Kirkby Lonsdale's got Talent,' alongside fellow judges Jim Bowen and musician John Helliwell. The show will be held at Queen Elizabeth School, in aid of the Kirkby Lonsdale Play Partnership. The Play Partnership seeks to raise £120,000 to provide safe play areas for children, the first phase being for toddlers, including interactive play devices.

Farron: "Politics must be brought back to the people!"

Tim Farron MP is calling for a Citizens Convention to look at how politics can be brought back to the people. Mr Farron has recently signed a parliamentary motion, EDM 621, calling for the implementation of the Citizens Convention Bill. The bill would directly address public distrust in politics and politicians because the Government as part of the convention would be required to take steps to actively involve those members of society most dissatisfied and disengaged with the current system.

"Budget shows the Government will fail on the environment and child poverty" - Farron

Local MP Tim Farron has blasted Chancellor Alistair Darling's first Budget, delivered this afternoon, as a cop out on green issues, and an admission that the Government would fail to meet its own targets on child poverty. The Chancellor failed to adequately address the problem of climate change, using green taxes only to take money out of the pockets of the lowest earners.
