Farron gets national park democratisation into Queen's Speech

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that his long term campaign to democratise our National Parks has made a big step forward. Today the Government announced that in the next legislative session it will bring forward a draft bill, proposing legislation in this area.

Tim backs financial education in local schools

Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, is encouraging local schools to put on money lessons this June, to give their pupils a head-start in financial education before it becomes a compulsory part of the new National Curriculum in September. The move comes in advance of this year's My Money Week (9 to 15 June), run by national financial education charity pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group).

MP welcomes fall in unemployment rate

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed today's unemployment figures from the Office of National Statistics, which show a further fall in the number of unemployed people in Westmorland and Lonsdale. The number of unemployed people in Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency in April 2014 was 357. This represents a rate of 0.9% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 643rd highest of the 650 UK parliamentary constituencies. (1st = highest rate of unemployment, 650th = lowest rate of unemployment.) The number of claimants is 180 lower than in April 2013 and 34 lower than in March 2014. This data is not seasonally adjusted. Tim said: "This further fall in unemployment is encouraging new for the South Lakes. However, there is absolutely no room for complacency, and we must remain aware of the fact that the South Lakes has a large elderly population which isn't accounted for in these figures. MP praises 'World Class' Kendal Mountain Festival

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has heralded the news that Kendal Mountain Festival (KMF) has won the prestigious Visit England Tourist Event of the Year Gold Award. KMF, along with four other Cumbrian businesses, were finalists in the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2014. The Awards celebrate tourism industry excellence and provide a platform to showcase the very best that England has to offer. At a glittering black tie event held at Cheltenham Racecourse two of KMF's Directors, Clive Allen and Steve Scott, were there to collect the award. Tim said: "This is wonderful news and the recognition of many years hard work, especially from Clive and Steve and all the people who have helped make Kendal Mountain Festival a major date in the local and international calendar. This award could not have gone to a more worthy recipient."
