You can be heroes says MP
An MP is urging his constituents to join the bone marrow register. South Lakes MP Tim Farron, is helping national charity Anthony Nolan mark its 40th anniversary by encouraging more donors to sign up.
For the first time, the charity has mapped the donor register by area across the UK. They analysis revealed there are 814 people in Westmorland & Lonsdale who are willing to donate their stem cells through their bone marrow to save the life of a stranger. In Barrow & Furness a massive 2322 people have signed up.
More than 525,000 people are on the Anthony Nolan register and the average per constituency is 796.
Two-thirds of UK patients will not find a matching donor from within their families. Instead, they turn to Anthony Nolan to find them an unrelated donor.
Tim said: "There are 814 heroes in Westmorland alone on the register, which is a wonderful figure. However, I'm hunting for more people to sign up today so we can fight blood cancer together. By joining the bone marrow register you can help save a life today. There are nearly 1,600 people in the UK in need of a bone marrow transplant. This is usually their last chance of survival. If you have five minutes to spare today please sign up and help save a life."
