We must trust our headteachers to make the right choice over reopening schools – MP
South Lakes MP Tim Farron is urging the Government to trust headteachers to decide when it is right for their school to safely reopen.
On Friday, Tim held a virtual meeting with the headteachers of local primary schools to hear their questions and concerns about the Government's plan for schools to begin reopening from June 1st.
Tim said: "When I spoke to our local heads last week they were committed to doing everything they could in the bounds of what is safe and practical to reopen their schools.
"It's also right to recognise that teachers are working very hard right now teaching the children of key workers, while at the same time providing telephone and virtual one-to-one support for pupils who are at home.
"We all want to return to 'normal' and schools being reopened is a big part of that - but it's very important we don't put headteachers under pressure to make decisions that are not safe.
"We should trust their judgement, and the judgement of parents, when they assess the risk as to how far or whether at all schools reopen on June 1st."
