Unesco stripping Liverpool of World Heritage Site Status must serve as wake up call to the Government over the future of the Lake District - MP

22 Jul 2021

Commenting on the news that Unesco has stripped Liverpool of its World Heritage Site Status, South Lakes MP Tim Farron said: "This deeply alarming decision must serve as a wake up call to the Government to make sure that the same thing doesn't happen here to the Lake District.

"When Unesco awarded World Heritage Status to the Lake District it was notable that they gave as much credit to the farmers as they did the glaciers.

"But the Government's cuts to farm payments, as well as their utterly stupid move to financially encourage farmers to retire without any plans to replace them, could dramatically change and ruin the beautiful landscape of the Lakes within the space of just a decade.

"This should also act as a reminder that we need to be giving the Lake District National Park Authority far more powers and resources to that stop the recent worrying trend of millionaires taking the mickey with planning regulations and building deeply inappropriate developments."
