Town Council votes to oppose Government Bill which would undermine Kendal’s environment
Liberal Democrats on Kendal Town Council have voted in favour of condemning and opposing a controversial Government Bill "which will reverse decades of progress on environmental and wildlife protection".
The cross party motion asks the council to write to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in opposition of the Retained EU Law (Reform and Revocation) Bill.
The motion also called on the council to invite spokespeople from key local environmental and wildlife organisations to update on their activities in opposing the bill and to indicate how the council may assist their campaign. Suggested organisations could include the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Friends of the Lake District and South Cumbria Rivers Trust.
Speaking after the vote, Lib Dem Councillor Kate Simpson, who seconded the motion said: "This Bill will reverse so many laws that we have in this country which guarantee high levels of environmental protection.
"I'm delighted that councillors of all parties came together to put forward and back this motion.
"Kendal Town Council will work with local organisations to lobby those in power to abandon these ludicrous plans which threaten our wildlife."
