Tim gets Ministerial support for his call for an end to second home council tax subsidy

Speaking in the House of Commons this morning, Tim Farron, MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, again called on the government to cut the council tax subsidy available to second home owners.

The council tax subsidy, of between 10% and 50%, can be claimed on any home that is not considered a primary place of residence. In the South Lakeland area, despite District Council offering the smallest subsidy possible, it still cost taxpayers £1.25 million a year.

Commenting after Tim said: "I am delighted that Communities and Local Government Minister Greg Clark agreed to look into my proposals to cut this tax subsidy, which benefits only those who can already afford to own more than one home."

"In a time where we are having to make savings this is a simple and fair way of saving a significant amount of money and I look forward to seeing the Minister's plans to put this idea into action and getting rid of this unfair tax subsidy in the New Year."
