Tim Farron signs motion for new Government to compensate WASPI women
Local MP Tim Farron is backing a motion in Parliament calling on the new Government to compensate women impacted by historic changes to the state pension.
Back in March, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman determined that women born in the 1950s should be compensated due to failures to inform them of changes to pension ages properly.
However, the Ombudsman said it was the responsibility of Parliament to vote on compensation with the then Conservative Government coming under fire for failing to comply.
The motion, which has been tabled by the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Work and Pensions, Wendy Chamberlain, urges the Government to “honour the recommendations of the Ombudsman, and come forward with a proper plan to compensate these women”.
Tim said: “Nearly four million women, including many here in Cumbria, had their worlds turned upside down by the incompetence of the DWP.
“It was appalling that the Conservative Government completely ignored the Ombudsman’s recommendations.
“This new Government now has a fresh opportunity to right this wrong and act.
“The WASPI campaigners, here in Cumbria and across the country, have suffered for long enough.”
