Tim Farron demands action after another serious accident at M6 junction
Local MP Tim Farron has written to National Highways and the Department for Transport asking for urgent action to improve the safety at Junction 37 of the M6 after yet another crash took place today.
Emergency services were called to the junction following a serious collision involving a car and a bus. The driver and passenger of the car were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
This afternoon, National Highways have told Tim they will fast track a safety review at the junction.
In his letter, Tim said: “It is with a heavy heart that l am compelled to contact you again today following another serious pile up at Junction 37. As we speak, emergency services and the air ambulance are on the scene.
“I cannot stress enough how disappointed l feel with the apparent lack of urgency shown by National Highways around addressing the problems at the M6 Junction 37. I wrote to you at the end of August following another fatality at this notorious junction and was disappointed that National Highways failed to see how much a change in the existing layout is needed and this has to happen now.
“The frequency of accidents and near misses is indicative of the existing road layout not working effectively to protect motorists and l am totally in support of a stop sign being introduced, along with accompanying signage to warn drivers to slow as they turn off at this junction given its record history.
“I feel that it is incumbent on the Government to stipulate action from National Highways to prevent the loss of further life and the tragedy this brings to the families and friends of those who die or suffer life changing injuries, when preventative measures as simple as changing from a give way to a stop road layout could be all it takes to stop these tragic incidents from becoming all too commonplace.”
