Tim Farron celebrates campaign win as post office services set to return to Shap
Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has warmly welcomed the news that post office services will return to Shap, following a long-running campaign.
Shap has been without a post office since February 2023 after the couple running the newsagents retired. The village shop in Shap reopened back in November but there had been a delay in them being given permission to run post office services.
Last November, Tim met with the Minister responsible for Post Office services, Kevin Hollinrake MP, to ask him to intervene.
In January, he also raised the issue on the floor of the House of Commons where the minister said he would “work with him to make sure that that situation is resolved as quickly as possible”.
This week, Post Office Ltd have announced that the post office will reopen in the village shop in Shap on Tuesday 21st May.
Speaking today, Tim said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news that we’ve won our campaign to reopen the Post Office in Shap.
“I want to pay tribute to Cheryl Benson for her determination to bring a post office back to the village so that local residents have easy access again to these important services.
“Post offices are vital community hubs and I believe they could have a really bright future as a one-stop shop to access Government services.”
