Tim backs funding grants for WW2 veterans

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has backed a Big Lottery Fund initiative which helps WW2 veterans and their spouses return to places across the world where they served, or make a commemorative visit within the UK.

The Heroes Return 2 programme offers veterans from the UK, Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland grants of up to £8,140 towards travel and accommodation expenses.

With this year marking the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, Heroes Return 2 offers a valuable opportunity for former service personnel to commemorate lost friends. D-Day marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War, which culminated in allied victory in Europe in May 1945 and in the Far East in August.

To date, over £28 million has been awarded to more than 57,000 veterans, their widows, spouses and carers, for journeys in the UK, France, Germany, the Middle East, Far East and beyond.

Tim said, "I strongly support the Big Lottery Fund's Heroes Return 2 programme. With both the First World War centenary and 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings this year, it is vital we remember the lessons of history and ensure that those who served can commemorate the huge sacrifices made."
