South Lakes MP asks Government to clarify whether people are allowed to go recycling centres during the lockdown
Local MP Tim Farron has written to the Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick, asking him whether members of the public will be allowed go to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) during the lockdown.
It comes after the minister announced in the House of Commons earlier today that he will be asking local councils to "plan the organised reopening of waste and recycling centres".
However, travelling to recycling centres is not currently on the Government's list of 'essential reasons to leave your home', sparking fears that members of the public could be stopped by the police.
In his letter to the Secretary of State, Tim said: "There is clearly a demand for this service, however our local council is obviously keen to avoid a situation where they put residents in a position that they breach the 'stay at home' guidance.
"The council are also aware that police forces in some areas of the country have indicated they would fine residents travelling to household waste recycling waste centres.
"I note that your statement today did not say whether the guidance around what is essential travel would be changed, and I therefore ask that this is clarified before HWRCs start opening back up to the public so that my constituents can be clear whether they are allowed to drive to a HWRC or not."
