Creating a thriving high street in Kendal and other towns in South Lakeland is a key Council Plan priority for SLDC.

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that South Lakeland was yet again the top place in the county for businesses to start.

Figures collated by the organisation Banksearch and released by the Cumbria Statistical Observatory show that there were 657 business start-ups in Cumbria in the quarter Feb-Apr 15.

This is 68 more than in the previous quarter (Nov 14-Jan 15). The highest number of start-ups, 179 was in South Lakeland (27% of all start-ups) followed by Allerdale with 118 (18%) and Carlisle with 117 (18%).

As in previous quarters, the highest number of start-ups was in the real estate & professional services sector, this was followed by construction and accommodation & food services recreation and wholesale & retail.

Tim said: "These figures show that South Lakeland is the entrepreneurial engine of the county. When small businesses in the Lakes thrive, then so does our whole economy."
