Save Greenodd Post Office campaign moves to bypass opening

10 Apr 2008

Local MP Tim Farron will respectfully decline an invitation to attend the new £36m A590 High and Low Newton bypass tomorrow in favour of joining a protest, which will take place at the opening, against the closure of Greenodd post office. The branch at Greenodd is slated to be replaced by a so-called 'outreach' service which will involved much-reduced accessibility.

The protest, which will not aim to disrupt the official opening, is intended to draw attention to the campaign to save a vital local service.

Tim Farron said:

"I still retain a real expectation that we can save Greenodd from closure. I hope that, with a significant attendance, we can grab the attention of the Secretary of State responsible for post office, John Hutton, who will be present at the opening.

"There was a successful campaign to secure the new bypass - and I strongly hope that the campaign to save our local post offices will be just as successful.

"It is clear that the Greenodd branch is extremely important to the local community, and I am delighted with the efforts of the great many local residents who have joined the campaign."
