SAFER LANTERNS NEEDED TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRYSIDE
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, Tim Farron, has called on the government to enforce rules that require distributors of Chinese Sky Lanterns to follow health and safety guidelines set out by General Product Safety Regulations.
Chinese Sky Lanterns are a recent phenomenon to the UK market and have cause considerable damage both to property and to British livestock as a result of discarded lanterns or those used without following the proper safety instructions.
While high quality Lanterns that come with detailed health and safety instructions are deemed relatively safe, the major surge in popularity over the past few years have led to much poorer quality lanterns becoming available in the shops and it is these lanterns which are blamed for the damage.
Commenting today Tim said: "While these lanterns are great to look at and can be enjoyed on many different occasions, it is important that we do not allow poor quality lanterns to destroy our countryside and livestock.
"By encouraging manufacturers and retailers to supply only high quality, 100% biodegradable lanterns with proper health and safety instructions, we can ensure that everyone can enjoy these lanterns safely."
