South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the outcome of a meeting this morning to discuss the proposals for a new cancer treatment unit in Kendal.

The meeting, convened by Tim and held at the Westmorland General Hospital, included representatives from the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, NHS Cumbria and NHS North Lancashire.

Speaking after the meeting, Tim said: "I'm very grateful to everyone who was at the meeting for coming along and discussing the proposals for a cancer treatment unit in the round. It is clear that the four organisations are all committed to building the unit, and that the preferred site is now the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.

"The meeting was very useful and productive, and has increased the pace and urgency of the plans.

"It was also clear that the support of the public here in the South Lakes has been vital in getting the plans for a cancer treatment unit off the ground. I'd therefore like to thank each and every person who has signed the petition in support of the new unit, and ask anyone who has not yet done so to sign up today."
