South Lakes MP Tim Farron has criticised the Government's compensation package for disgruntled Northern commuters for only being available to people with season tickets.

At a meeting of Cumbria Better Connected in Ulverston, Tim said that the Government had completely disregarded the thousands of passengers who regularly use the Lakes, Furness and Coast Lines in Cumbria who don't have season tickets.

Tim said: "Rail bosses from across the industry have apologised for the utter chaos that passengers in Cumbria have had to endure over the past three months.

"But their apologies will be seen as nothing more than crocodile tears.

"The Government's decision to only make extra rail compensation available to a small percentage of people, simply adds to the feeling that they are more concerned about headlines and simply don't care about rail passengers in the North.

"They could make a step to change the anger out there today by extending compensation to passengers who don't have season tickets."
