Over 1,500 of the lowest paid workers in South Lakeland will stop paying income tax today thanks to the Liberal Democrats, local MP Tim Farron has revealed.

Furthermore, almost 43,000 people across South Lakeland will be up to £200 better off because of changes pioneered by the Liberal Democrats and announced in the emergency budget in June 2010.

Commenting Tim said: "This is fantastic news for people here in the South Lakes as it will reduce the tax burden of the lowest paid people across our area. By taking away the burden of income tax, we can ensure that people have more flexibility with their finances

"It will make a huge difference, not only for the initial 1,500 plus people who will stop paying income tax altogether, but to 43,000 others who get a tax cut and will now be better off thanks to the Liberal Democrats. This commitment was on the front page of our manifesto and now it's being delivered by the Government."

"We are dealing with a terrible financial mess left behind by the Labour Government, but it is absolutely right that we look after the lowest paid, even in the tough times we face."
