'Offer a Lake District respite break' - Farron in homes for victims plea
South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has issued a plea to South Lakes homeowners to provide respite accommodation to victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Police have confirmed that the fire, which took hold of the building last Wednesday, has left 79 people dead, thought that number could rise. However, hundreds of residents who survived the fire have been left without a home. Tim is calling for anyone who owns an unused property in South Lakeland to offer the home as a respite break to victims of the disaster.
Tim said: "It was heart-breaking to see the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire, which took the lives of so many people. The government must look at what changes must be made to building regulations to ensure a disaster like this cannot happen again. However, we must not forget the immediate human tragedy of the hundreds of people who have lost loved ones, whose homes have been destroyed, and whose lives have been turned upside-down.
"I'd like to issue a plea for anyone who has an empty home or second home in our area to consider offering this for a respite break to a victim of this terrible disaster. If you are able to offer a place for someone to take a holiday, please do get in touch."
