News of cheaper rail fares for Cumbria signals community campaign is working - MP
Local MP Tim Farron says that the community campaign for better local rail services is working after Northern announced it is slashing train fares in South Cumbria this month.
From Monday 4th March until Saturday 6th April off-peak tickets prices will be reduced by 25% on certain lines in Cumbria and Lancashire.
The announcement comes after Northern told South Lakeland District Council that the Furness and Lakes Lines will be the first lines in the country to get their brand-new trains.
Tim said: "After a shocking year on the railways, it's great to see Northern realise that they can't keep taking passengers in South Cumbria for granted.
"News of cheaper fares and new trains shows that our community campaign and constant pressure on rail bosses for a better service is working. But it's also testament to the tireless work of our local rail user groups who provide a first-class service fighting for passengers all year round.
"However, we mustn't get complacent. Let's keep up the pressure because as we've shown so many times in the past, industry bosses who try and mess us about soon realise that they've picked on the wrong community."
