MP welcomes Town Council consultation on 20 mph zones
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news Kendal Town Council (KTC) will be consulting with the public about whether the current 20mph speed zones in Kendal should be extended.
Early next year, KTC will put various ideas to residents for their views. One possibility is that the whole of Kendal becomes subject to a 20 mile an hour speed limit. Another possibility is simply to implement in residential areas. A third possibility is that it only applies in those residential areas where people have requested it. This will allow the people of Kendal to make their voice heard on if they want Kendal Town Council to request the County for more 20 mile an hour speed limits, and if so where.
A task force consisting of Kendal Fell Councillor Giles Archibald, Kendal Underley Councillor Paul Bramham, Kendal Parks Councillor Keith Hurst-Jones, Councillor David Evans of Mintsfeet and Heron Hill Councillor Andy Blackman have been looking at this issue.
Tim said: "I welcome the group's creation and their keenness to make sure the public are consulted. I hope we can get representatives, residents, the council and the police on the same page we can look at expanding the 20's plenty zones we already have in Kendal. It is vital that we work through all the issues - enforcement, effective community engagement and costs, but in principle this is something I am very supportive of."
Tim has been named as a 'Campaign Champion' by a national charity for his work on road safety and sustainable transport. This news follows on from an announcement in July, when Tim received a national road safety award by the charity Brake for his long-term campaign to resurface his constituency's roads and make them a safer place to travel on. The charity praised Tim's work in helping to make the A684 safer and his work on bringing '20s plenty zones' to residential areas in Kendal.
