Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the backing of South Lakeland District Council for his campaign to bring a radiotherapy unit to Kendal.

At a council meeting last night, councillors voted in favour of a motion tabled by Lib Dem councillor Matt Severn.

Tim said: "I'm delighted that the local council have got behind our campaign to bring a satellite radiotherapy unit to Westmorland General Hospital.

"It's frankly cruel that people suffering with cancer in South Cumbria are forced to make 2-3-hour round trips in order to receive life-saving care."

Matt said: "It was great to see the motion get the full backing of the council - I know from personal experience what it's like to see a loved one have to travel for vital treatment when they are already really ill.

"However, it was a shame to see that the Conservative's amendment failed to acknowledge that their own Government withdrew the funding for the unit two years ago - funding that was agreed when the Lib Dems were in Government."
