MP welcomes new joint effort to clear the ice

5 Jan 2010

Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the moves by South Lakeland District Council and the Lib Dem-run local committee of the County Council to work together in the effort to clear pathways and car parks from compacted snow and ice.

Tim and Liberal Democrat councillors from both bodies put pressure on the Conservative-led administration at the County Council in Carlisle to accept help from the District Council and to provide grit salt to enable the District Council employees to tackle the icy conditions.

Earlier today, Tim led a team of volunteers who cleared a pathway from the retirement bungalows at Nobles Rest off Maude Street in Kendal. It took 3 hours for Tim and other helpers to clear the path through the fortnight-old compacted ice to allow some of the elderly residents to leave their homes for the first time since Christmas.

Tim said, "It's great to see the District Council donating its staff to the effort - it's important that we all work together at this time to keep roads and pathways safe to use, especially for older residents."
