MP welcomes fall in drink-driving incidents

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has welcomed the latest statistics showing that the number of incidents related to drink driving in the North West is going down.

The latest government figures released earlier this month show that the number of deaths per year caused by drink driving in the North West fell significantly, from 30 to 10.

The total number of drink-driving accidents in the North West fell by 5% from the previous year, from 660 to 630. The total number of casualties killed or injured fell by 8%, from 1040 to 960.

Tim said: "A lot of work has been done to promote awareness of the dangers of drink driving, and the welcome news is that the number of incidents is going down. However, even one death or injury caused by drink driving is an avoidable tragedy, and the statistics show that there is still a long way to go. The enjoyment of an extra drink can never outweigh the tragedy of an accident. It's not worth the risk."
