MP warmly welcomes campaign win to protect tenant farmers
Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has warmly welcomed the Government’s announcement that they will appoint a Tenant Farming Commissioner this autumn to help resolve problems between tenants and farmers.
It comes just a few weeks after Tim tabled a Presentation Bill in Parliament which called for the introduction of a Tenant Farming Commissioner.
Last month, around 65 tenant farmers in Cumbria received letters giving them notice to quit.
Both the National Farmers Union and the Tenant Farmers Association have supported the creation of a Tenant Farming Commissioner.
Tim said: “I’m delighted that the Government have finally agreed to appoint a Tenant Farming Commissioner who can fight to protect the rights of vulnerable tenant farmers.
“This can’t come a moment too soon.
“While there are some fantastic landlords, many farmers I speak to are dealing with landlords who are behaving in an appalling way. Some are not consulting their farmers when they are completely changing the way their business operates, and some are even serving evictions notices with very little warning.”
