MP urges Government to keep promise to tackle plastic pollution

In Parliament last night, South Lakes MP Tim Farron pressed the Government to keep their pledge to tackle plastic pollution.

From January 1st, shipments of unsorted plastic waste from the EU to non-OECD countries were banned, but Britain will continue to allow plastic waste to be exported to developing countries, despite a Conservative manifesto commitment to ban the practice.

Speaking during a debate on the Government's Environment Bill, Tim said: "The absence of plastic waste reduction targets in this Bill absolutely beggars belief, given the rhetoric we have heard from many in the Government.

"The Conservative manifesto made a specific reference, a promise even, to ban the export of plastic waste to developing countries. The Government have broken that promise.

"So not only are they not tackling our plastic problem here at home, but we are adding to the plastic problem of poorer countries overseas."
