MP Tim Farron to hold public meeting on Ambleside campus closure

4 Dec 2009

South Lakes MP Tim Farron is holding a public meeting on Monday (7 December) in Ambleside Parish Church at 7pm to discuss the proposals of the University of Cumbria to "mothball" their Ambleside campus.

All members of the local community are welcome to attend the meeting to have their say. Tim has invited the vice-chancellor of the university to the meeting to speak to local residents and businesses and answer their questions. Other members of the panel at the meeting will include the president of the students' union and local councillors.

Tim said, "It is clear that the local community are extremely concerned about the proposals to close Ambleside campus - there was a huge amount of support from the community yesterday when I joined students who marched through the town to show their opposition to the plans.

It's no wonder the community are concerned when the district council estimate this move could cost the local economy in excess of £5million. I am speaking to government ministers and potential funders, as well as the university authorities, to try and avoid this closure - especially a closure that would happen almost overnight. I would implore all local residents to come along and make their voices heard on Monday."
