MP Tackles Dangerous Route to Rural School

15 Feb 2007

Tim Farron MP joined parents and their children from Old Hutton Primary School to walk a typical and well used school run. The route, which goes from Old Hutton Primary School to Bridge End, starts along a specially built footpath in a field but ends 200 yards short of Bridge End, leaving parents and children to face a treacherous walk along a dangerous road.

Tim and local Councillor Peter Thornton met with head teacher Mr Frost and parents, and discussed their concerns whilst walking this hazardous route.

After the footpath ends there is a grass verge that goes most of the way to Bridge End that could be turned into a safe footpath. Tim has now written to Cumbria Highways asking for this to be done.

Tim said: "Peter Thornton and I were deeply concerned to see the dangerous stretch of road which children and their parents are forced to walk along twice a day. I'm therefore formally requesting that the highways authority build an extension to the footpath alongside the road to Bridge End in the interests of safety."
