MP tables motion in Parliament to offer asylum to Asia Bibi
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in Parliament calling on the Government to immediately extend an offer of unconditional asylum to Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi and her family.
Mrs Bibi was freed from death row last month after eight years in jail on blasphemy charges, but her acquittal sparked violent protests and the Pakistani government has agreed to try to stop her leaving the country.
Tim's motion, which has been signed by 41 MPs so far from all parties, calls on the Government to intervene immediately to protect Mrs Bibi.
Tim said: "As a country we've always been proud to look after those are in need of help and safety - and this case should be no different.
"It's important that we demonstrate our commitment to religious tolerance and offer unconditional asylum to Asia Bibi and her family."
