MP slams electricity cut offs in freezing temperatures as 'shameful and irresponsible'

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has slammed Electricity North West's decision to cut off electricity to a number of homes to do 'non-emergency maintenance work' during the current cold-snap.

Constituents from across the area contacted Tim after Electricity North West refused to reconsider their decision - in one case telling a constituent they could 'wear a hat' to keep warm.

With temperatures dropping to as low as -14°C in our area, Electricity North West is continuing with plans to switch off electricity to residents in Milnthorpe, Storth, Burton and Allithwaite for hours at a time. The company admits it will not provide any support for people during the maintenance work.

Speaking this morning, Tim said: "I cannot believe the decision of Electricity North West in shutting off electricity to people in these conditions. I think it is simply irresponsible. I cannot be more angry about this plan. I think to even suggest it is shameful.

"I know that many elderly and vulnerable people will be affected by this and I want Electricity North West to know that if they continue with their plans I will ask for an official review by the electricity regulator, OFGEM, into this."
