MP’s delight as Government finally bring forward new law to ban ‘no fault’ evictions
Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has warmly welcomed today's announcement that the Government are finally set to ban Section 21 'no fault' evictions.
A new law to be tabled in Parliament would abolish no-fault evictions and end bans on tenants claiming benefits.
The Renters (Reform) Bill bill would also make it easier for landlords to repossess properties from anti-social tenants.
The Government promised this reform in their 2019 election manifesto, but have been criticised by housing campaigners for dragging their feet.
Last year, research by the housing charity Shelter, said nearly 230,000 private renters had been served with a no-fault eviction notice since April 2019.
Tim said: "We've been waiting a long time for the Government to get their act together and do this, but I'm glad we are finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
"Here in Cumbria, I've spoken to dozens of local people who have been served with a Section 21 eviction from their home, just so their landlord can put it on Airbnb and make a quick earner.
"Renters deserve the protection and assurance that they can't simply be evicted at a drop of their hat by their landlord through no fault of their own.
"I'm just sad that this has come too late for hundreds of local people who have already had their lives ruined, had to uproot their children and lose the roof over their head."
