MP provides parliamentary support to Help the Aged Campaign

Local MP Tim Farron has in parliament this week shown his support for the new Help the Aged Campaign 'My Home Life'. By putting forward a parliamentary Early Day Motion Tim hopes to raise awareness of this programme which seeks to improve the quality of life of older people in care homes. The motion also calls upon the Government to take note of the recommendations of the My Home Life report in drawing up new minimum standards for care homes.

The report is the result of a partnership between Help the Aged, the National Care Forum and the National Care Homes Research and Development Forum through consultation with older people and representatives of the care home sector. Both the campaign and the report emphasise the need for all stakeholders in the care sector to come together to celebrate, share and build upon good practice. 'My Home Life' also highlights the link between how those working with the elderly are treated and the care that residents receive. As a result it recommends that additional support and informational resources need to be put which would help care providers feel appreciated as a profession.

"Older people should rightly be seen as valued members of our community and it is imperative that their quality of life not be compromised as a result of their additional care and support needs,

"These measures would go a long way in providing care home residents with the opportunity to live fulfilling and purposeful lives and by acting now we can safeguard the quality of our care homes for future generations."
