MP presses National Highways to crack on with safety improvements to A590
This week in Parliament, Cumbrian MP Tim Farron met with Bruce Parker, Head of Planning & Development, North West at National Highways, to ask for vital safety improvements to be delivered on the A590.
During the meeting, Tim pushed for progress on plans to introduce speed cameras and lower speed limits on those sections of the road which has been plagued with accidents throughout recent years.
Tim also pressed for:
- The carriageway to be widened to enable safe turning at Newby Bridge garage
- A foot and cycle bridge at the junction by Haverthwaite Railway Station
- A roundabout at the junction by Gilpin Bridge near Levens
According to the Department for Transport from 2015 to 2019, there were eight fatalities, 14 serious accidents and 58 slight accidents on the A590.
Tim said: "The A590 is an absolutely crucial link between Barrow, Kendal and the M6.
"Tragically though it has become an accident blackspot, with numerous incidents of people sadly losing their lives.
"I want to pay enormous tribute to the tireless campaigning from local residents, local parish councils, and local councillor Sue Sanderson who have been banging the drum to make this road safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
"It's vital there is no delay, and that the proposed work is done urgently to prevent more lives tragically being lost."
