MP presses minister for swift resolution to flood insurance talks
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called for a swift resolution to talks between the government and the Association of British Insurers over a new flood insurance framework to replace the current statement of principles, which expires on June 30th 2013.
In a letter to the Environment Secretary Owen Paterson, Tim stressed the urgent need for constructive talks to continue after reports emerged suggesting they were close to collapse. Tim had been contacted by the National Flood Forum, who have made strong calls to both sides for an agreement to be reached, and wrote to the Minister to lend his support to their efforts.
The government have been in negotiations with the ABI for two years over a successor to the statement of principles, which was agreed in 2008 to renew flood cover for victims. Unless a new settlement is reached before its expiry, affected householders face the prospect of being refused cover. Tim stressed the point that people in flood affected areas across Cumbria like the Hallgarth and Mintsfeet estates in Kendal, Sedbergh and Meathop must have recourse to long term support and are able to rely on comprehensive, affordable insurance policies.
Commenting, Tim said: "After the devastating floods in Cumbria this summer, it is absolutely vital to so many people in our area that the government and the ABI agree a framework to cover them against future disasters. This must be both comprehensive and affordable for all income groups, so that those of our communities who suffer such damage to their homes and livelihoods know they are covered financially.
"I have written to Owen Paterson in order to seek assurances that the government are committing fully to these talks, and asked him to outline how the government will work collaboratively with the ABI to find the best possible outcome for the people of Cumbria and indeed the whole country. I hope that a positive resolution can be found as a matter of urgency"
