Yesterday, local MP Tim Farron presented the business case for a satellite radiotherapy unit at Westmorland General Hospital during a meeting with the health minister Seema Kennedy.

The minister expressed concern about the distance that patients in South Cumbria currently have to travel for life-saving cancer treatment and promised to ask NHS England, who commission the service, to meet with Tim to take this forward.

Tim said: "I'd like to thank the minister for taking the time to meet with me and hear our case.

"She had great sympathy with people here in the South Lakes who are forced to travel such long distances to access essential treatment.

"The pressure on ministers and health officials to act is mounting and we won't give until up we bring this vital cancer treatment closer to home for thousands of local cancer patients."
