MP praises local people one year on from the floods

On the one year anniversary of the floods, South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in parliament praising local people for their "strength and resilience in the face of such devastation" and highlighting the plight of those who have yet to return to their homes.

Tim's motion in parliament also calls for the government to ensure that the planned flood relief scheme for the River Kent catchment area is built as soon as possible once the Environment Agency's final plans are published early next year.

Tim said: "One year ago exactly, our area was hit by the worst floods in living memory, destroying people's homes and livelihoods. It was a devastating time for our area, and it was heart-breaking to see the destruction.

"This difficult period showed our communities at their very finest, and made me even more proud to represent our area. People who had lost almost everything rallied around to support those who had literally lost everything. The support that people showed for their neighbours at this time was truly incredible to see.

"In the days, weeks and months that followed, the vast majority of my time was taken up dealing with issues related to flooding. Whether it was taking up the fight against insurance companies who were being difficult or pushing the government to provide cash to fix roads and bridges, I have tried to support local residents and help get our area back on its feet.

"One year on, it is important that we spare a thought for those whose lives have still not returned to normal. I'd encourage anyone who is still having problems to get in touch and I will do my best to help.

"I'd also like to thank the Town, District and County Councils for their work helping flood victims and helping our area to fight back from this disaster."
