South Lakes MP Tim Farron has praised staff, parents and pupils as figures released by the Department for Education show that almost four in every five of Cumbria's school children left primary school in the summer achieving the expected levels of success in reading, writing and arithmetic.

The figures show that 79% of children achieved level four in the tests. This is exactly on the national average, but in a new more rigorous framework that demands higher standards.

The data is based on 4897 pupils taking their Sats test. The tests are to assess children in education from early years to the end of key stage 2.

Tim said: "In primary schools throughout Cumbria, I hope they are celebrating these results. I want to praise the students, parents and staff for these great results. They show that we have wonderful schools, at the heart of many of our communities.

"These results show that even though the tests have got harder, our teachers and pupils have risen to the challenge. We all should be incredibly proud of the students efforts."
