MP praises council’s ‘bold’ new housing plan

11 Dec 2017

Local MP Tim Farron has praised South Lakeland District Council's 'bold' new initiative to help tackle a shortage of rental homes in the area.

The Lib Dem-run council is planning to lend £6m to local housing associations to help them build affordable homes.

SLDC wants 1,000 properties to be built by 2025 to meet demand and wants to kick-start building by offering low-interest finance.

Tim said: "The Government's failure to properly address the housing crisis in this country has led to it becoming almost impossible for young people to get their foot on the housing ladder.

"Thankfully, in the South Lakes, we have a council with a strong track record when it comes to building affordable homes.

"This bold new proposal from the council is a big step forward in delivering the homes that our community need."
