MP meets with Transport Minister over support for bus services in Westmorland
This afternoon, Cumbrian MP Tim Farron met with the Minister for Local Transport, Richard Holden, to discuss improving rural bus services.
Tim pressed the minister to devolve powers to the new Westmorland and Furness Council so they can run their own bus services.
It comes as two key local bus services - the W1 in Sedbergh and the 530 on the Cartmel Peninsula - are set to be withdrawn next weekend.
The minister agreed to set up a meeting with the Department for Transport and Westmorland and Furness Council to discuss bringing more services to rural communities.
Speaking after the meeting, Tim said: "I'm really grateful to the minister for his time this afternoon.
"Having regular and affordable bus services is absolutely vital in helping connect our rural communities, supporting local businesses and reducing our carbon emissions.
"But sadly with the W1 and 530 services under serious threat, it feels like a real uphill battle at the moment.
"That's why the new Westmorland and Furness Council are seeking more funding to support bus services to help our communities thrive."
