Holocaust Memorial Day

This week, local MP Tim Farron has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust's Book of Commitment, to pledge his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and to honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as to pay tribute to the extraordinary survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people.

Holocaust Memorial Day is Friday 27th January, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp - the site of the largest mass murder in history. The theme for this year's commemorations is 'How can life go on?'

In the lead-up to and on Holocaust Memorial Day, schools, faith groups and community organisations have organised thousands of commemorative events across the country to remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

On Friday, Tim will attend a commemorative event at the Lake District Holocaust Project in Windermere.

Tim said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for us to reflect on the tragic events of the Holocaust, and to strengthen our resolve to stand up for the values of respect, tolerance and decency. We must fight intolerance and prejudice wherever we encounter it. The Holocaust was an indescribable atrocity, and we must never forget the victims of this evil. I would also like to pay tribute to the survivors, and thank them for their work educating the public."

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:

"Our mission is to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance. We are very grateful to Tim Farron for signing the Book of Commitment, signalling a continued commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust as well as challenging antisemitism, prejudice and bigotry in all its forms."
