This morning in Parliament, local MP Tim Farron raised the need for better access to Staveley train station for residents and visitors.

Speaking during a debate on accessibility at railway stations, Tim said: "Staveley station in my constituency, the first station in the Lake District National Park, is only accessible by a 41-step staircase.

"One of the problems is that in order to bid for access funding to change this - provide ramps and lifts to deal with that - is that we expect the operator to make a bid.

"And the operators, in our case Northern, who have not covered themselves in glory in recent times, have been very reluctant to make that bid.

"Surely we should be having a bit of a top-down approach where the minister helps us deliver solutions to Staveley's lack of access directly."
