MP joins government to launch 'Love your National Parks' campaign
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has joined National Parks England and Defra, to launch 'Love Your National Parks' celebration. The initiative welcomes everyone to celebrate all that England's 10 National Parks have to offer, and aims to boost the economic value of the Parks from tourism and other economic activity.
According to a report by National Parks England the 10 national parks offer great economic benefits, contributing £6bn a year in added value to the UK - as much as the aerospace industry. The parks' scenery and wildlife help attract 95m visitors a year who spend about £3bn.
England's National Parks are known for being superb landscapes, rich in heritage and wildlife, but they are also valuable generators of wealth and economic activity. In these difficult economic times the National Parks are seeking to enhance the contribution they can make based on their very special qualities. Tim and others are encouraging everyone to explore our National Parks.
Recent statistics show that:
■90% of people in England say National Parks are important to them.
■96% of people in England say they want every child to experience a National Park first hand
■A third of all spending on rural tourism in England is within National Parks and their neighbouring towns and villages
■This expenditure is estimated to support some 68,000 full time equivalent jobs
There will be a range of exciting activities that are going on right across the UK during National Parks Week during 29 July- 4 August.
Tim said: "We are so lucky to live so close to two national parks. Our parks boast stunning scenery and amazing countryside. Our national parks cost £1 per person and I think without a shadow of a doubt it is best pound I spend every year."
