MP joins ‘20’s Plenty for Us’ campaign for safer residential areas

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has joined the '20's Plenty for Us' campaign, a national initiative to pressure local authorities into designating every residential area as a 20 mile per hour zone.

Tim has voiced his support for the campaign, which has already encouraged a number of local authorities across the UK to adopt the policy and provided 5 million residents with safer residential roads.

In Cumbria, however, the Conservative-led county council has refused repeated requests from local residents and Lib Dem councillors in the South Lakes for more 20mph zones in our towns and villages.

Commenting, Tim said; "This is an issue that is raised with me regularly, with parents feeling that their children cannot walk or cycle to school because of the dangers that it often presents. After looking at surveys which suggest the reduced speed limit only increases an average journey by 40 seconds, I cannot see any reason why this campaign should not have my whole-hearted support.

"The campaign puts safety for both drivers and pedestrians first, which is a point that many local authorities have already realised and put into practice. It's about time Cumbria County Council did the same and helped make residential roads a safer place to travel."
