MP demands Culture Secretary intervene to stop destructive plans for European Super League

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has written to the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden urging him to intervene over destructive plans for a European Super League, warning that they "threaten to destroy English football".

Last night, it was revealed that six English football clubs had signed up to the new breakaway league, leading to mass condemnation and concerns about the future of sport in the country.

Tim has urged Mr Dowden to keep his party's general election manifesto commitment to "set up a fan-led review of football governance, which will include consideration of the Owners and Directors Test", in order to hold the owners of the six English clubs involved in the plans to account.

Writing to the Secretary of State for Culture, Tim said: "A breakaway league of this kind, based on nothing more than greed, threatens to marginalise fans and starve grassroots football of the funding it needs to survive.

"Be in no doubt, the owners of the six English clubs involved in these plans are about to inflict enormous and unprecedented damage on domestic football.

"In the 2019 General Election, your party pledged to "set up a fan-led review of football governance, which will include consideration of the Owners and Directors Test".

"Almost 18 months later and you've done nothing.

"Time really is of the essence now and it's absolutely critical that you act.

"I therefore urge you to fast-track this review and seek to change the criteria to the Owners and Directors Test, so that owners of football clubs who threaten to destroy English football are automatically disqualified from their role."
