MP congratulates book town success with Parliamentary motion

24 May 2006

Local MP Tim Farron has congratulated Sedbergh becoming England's first book town by proposing a motion in Parliament.

Tim's motion reads: "That this House celebrates the fact that Sedbergh became England's first Book Town on 12th May 2006; commends the beautiful Yorkshire Dales market town, which is home to six specialist book stores, as an excellent place for bibliophiles to visit; and praises the International Book Town movement, which was started by Richard Booth in Hay-on-Wye in the late 1970s."

Tim said: "Sedbergh has worked hard to be awarded this accolade - and I'm delighted that they have become England's first book town. This award will be a real boost for tourism in this part of the Yorkshire Dales, and will help keep Sedbergh alive as a sustainable community."
