Tim Farron MP is meeting with Great North Swim managers, businesses and others to plan a way forward to save the event next year.

The Great North Swim was due to take place in September but the organisers told competitors at the last minute in text messages that it had been cancelled.

Tim will be meeting Simon Berry, Chairman and Managing Director of English Lakes Hotel, former Gold medalist Brendan Foster and others, in the Conference Centre at Low Wood Hotel on Friday 3 December 2010.

Tim said, "I am keen to sit down with Brendan Foster and others and plan out what we can do next year to make sure the event goes ahead in 2011. The Great North swim is a massive boost to our local economy as many thousands of people come up for the weekend and stay at our great hotels and B&B's and eat at our fantastic restaurants. They need the Great North Swim and next Friday I will do all I can to make sure it goes ahead in 2011."
