On the floor of the House of Commons yesterday, local MP Tim Farron urged ministers to reinstate the ban on evictions to protect renters who are struggling financially over lockdown.

During the first national lockdown, the Government brought in an eviction moratorium for renters but that expired back in September.

Speaking in Parliament, Tim said: "The Government immediately extended mortgage holidays for those lucky enough to own their own homes, and rightly so, but they have done nothing for renters in the past few days or weeks."

"Surely this is a moment for the Government to rush through some legislation, to suspend section 8 on rent arrears and section 21 on no-fault evictions, and to increase the local housing allowance so that people can afford to pay their rent.

"It is important that we protect all our constituents from hardship, and that we protect their lives and well- being.

"Above all, it is essential that we protect them from potential homelessness and destitution."
