MP calls on govt to help cut the cost of bus travel for students

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has asked Transport Ministers to put pressure on bus operators to raise the upper age limit on children's fares from 16 to 18. Tim believes it would make a big difference to the cost of travel for 6th form and college students.

Tim has written to Baroness Susan Kramer, the Minister of State at the Department for Transport, asking her to personally step in and send guidance to all councils and bus operators about the issue.

Currently 17 and 18 years pay adult fares, even if they are studying at college and 6th form, or working as an apprentice. This is a major added cost for their families.

Tim said: "I have asked the government to send clear guidance to every council and every bus operator that they would like to see young adults not paying full adult fares every week. I think this would make a massive difference to young people and their families."
