MP calls on government to re-open Kendal magistrates court

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has urged the government to re-open the magistrates court in Kendal.

Back in June, the court was closed due to government cuts leaving hundreds of local families without easy access to justice.

Today in the House of Commons, the Cumbrian MP asked the Minister of State for Courts and Justice what he is going to do to restore physical access to justice for families in the South Lakes.

But Dominic Raab refused to give any assurances that the government were prepared to re-open the court.

Tim said: "I was extremely disappointed by the Minister's response.

"The closure of Kendal court this summer has removed easy access to justice for hundreds of people, increasing pressure on the police, legal professionals and local families.

"Since July, some local residents will have had to travel up to two and a half hours to Barrow or Lancaster to access the justice system - a journey which comes at a considerable cost.

"I have not given up and will continue to fight for local families to have local justice."
